Gangsters was a drama series which was broadcast on BBC1 in the United Kingdom. The series was set in Birmingham and followed the agents of D16 a departement of the CID.
Created by Philip Martin, and produced at the BBC Pebble Mill Studios in Birmingham by David Rose, 'Gangsters' deals with illegality in a multicultural society, with various white and ethnic groups competing to run scams, exploit illegal immigrants and outwit the morally suspect forces of Law. Almost inevitably, therefore, the series features racial stereotypes, occasionally portraying Indians as servile, black men as thugs and white males as culturally unaware. This caused an uproar after the original 'Play for Today' was broadcast and outrage from the press. Despite this outcry two series were later made and remained a cult favorite, memorable for its strong violence, multi-ethnic cast (and realistic - and now rather shocking - depiction of the racism of the time) and highly stylized, post-modern approach to storytelling. 'Gangsters' features references to film noir, gangster films, westerns, Bollywood and kung fu movies, as well as increasingly surreal end-of-episode cliffhangers and a bizarre final scene where the characters not only ?break the fourth wall? but walk off the set.
